Some great work going on with our #24in24 / #24en24 social media rally against Bill C-38.
- #ourbudget ¬rebudget had been tweeted 4,000 times in less than 24 hours
- #24in24 and #24en24 had been tweeted more than 2,000 times in less than 24 hours
It’s been inspiring for all of us in the House to see you rally against C-38 with us. Voting started later than anticipated, so I’m asking you to keep at it until we’re done.
Please keep tweeting/posting:
#ourbudget not yours #ourbudget not yours #13heroes #splititup save our pensions save our shores #C38 #cdnpoli #24in24
Until at least midnight tonight (EST). Let’s keep letting the Harper government know that they can’t pass this Trojan Horse without a fight. This is Our Budget — not theirs!
67 people out at the Our Budget meeting in Courtenay last night. Great work Comox Valley!
Check out the new Facebook events for Our Budget meetings in Selkirk, MB and Victoria, BC in our events section: http://facebook.com/nathan.cullen1/events
If you would like a list of Conservative MPs on Twitter to include in your #24in24 tweets, you can check out the following link (thanks to Victoria Radbourne for posting this on the page).
There have been lots of great tweets over the past 17 hours. A strong message being sent. What are some of your favourites?
At Rabble, Chloe Makepeace has ten reasons to oppose Bill C-38. As you saw from the list of Acts this Bill effects in some negative way, I have a lot more than ten reasons.
But the point is, this Bill can’t be allowed to slide by silently. We have to stand up for our communities and our country and remind the Harper government that this is Our Budget — not theirs!
Some tips for our upcoming #24in24 social media rally. Dave Jarvis has instructions on how you can “autotweet” so you don’t have to stay up all night with us protesting this Trojan Horse Bill: http://davidjarvis.ca/autotweet/
Also, Vancouver-based social media dashboard HootSuite has a scheduling function that will allow you to schedule both tweets and Facebook posts for the 24 hour period. And you can sign up for a HootSuite account for free.
Either option should help you participate in our social media rally. T-minus 4.5 hours until we remind the Harper government over and over again for 24 hours that this is Our Budget — not theirs!
Update: it looks like voting on C-38 will start today at 7:00pm Eastern. So that’s when we’ll aim to start our social media chant.
Again, the idea is starting at 5:30pm, tweet or post on Facebook the following:
#ourbudget not yours #ourbudget not yours #13heroes #splititup save our pensions save our shores #C38 #cdnpoli #24in24
Keep tweeting and posting that every hour for the entirety of the debate on Bill C-38 (expected to be 24 hours).
Let’s stand up, speak out, and remind the Harper government that this is Our Budget — not theirs!
Den Tandt nails it: the Conservatives’ arrogance will come back to bite them. Though I’m not sure we’ll have to wait very long. Tomorrow we’re going to watch as this government’s arrogance bites them for 24 hours straight.
And we’ll be there, the whole time, with you on social media, reminding the Harper that this is Our Budget — not theirs!
Here is the transcript of my point of privilege in the House earlier today. The fact that this government refuses to release vital information about the “budget” they’ve presented clearly demonstrates the fact they’ve forgotten that this is Our Budget, not theirs.
It’s time that we remind them of that fact — loud and clear.
Update: it looks like voting on C-38 will start tomorrow at 5:30pm Eastern. So that’s when we’ll aim to start our social media chant.
Again, the idea is starting at 5:30pm, tweet or post on Facebook the following:

Keep tweeting and posting that every hour for the entirety of the debate on Bill C-38 (expected to be 24 hours).

At 12:00am on June 14, debate on Bill C-38 will begin in the House of Common. I need you to add your voices to our opposition in the House. Here’s how.
Starting at 12:00am, I want you to tweet or post on Facebook the following:
#ourbudget not yours #ourbudget not yours #13heroes #splititup save our pensions save our shores #C38 #cdnpoli #24in24
I want you to keep tweeting and posting that every hour for the entirety of the debate on Bill C-38 (expected to be 24 hours). It’s like a rally chant, but on social media.
You can’t all be in the House with us. But we need you to make so much social media noise that you’re all Tony Clement sees when he checks Twitter.
Let’s stand up, speak out, and remind the Harper government that this is Our Budget — not theirs!
You can listen to my interview with CBC’s On The Coast about Bill C-38. As we move closer and closer to the vote, it’s vital that the chorus of voicing opposing this Trojan Horse Bill get louder and louder.
Add your voice at http://budget2012.ndp.ca/ and check out events tab for Our Budget meetings in your area.
Tim Harper notes that the, “PM is spending political capital on the omnibus budget bill.” That’s true, but not really the point.
Stephen Harper is spending the country’s capital — recklessly & irresponsibly. Weakening our environmental regulations, weakening our social safety net, weakening promises to our seniors. This government is selling our country short for a quick buck — it is our job to stop them.
Ben Spurr of NOW Toronto exhorts us to, “step off the omnibus.”
Good advice. Indeed, Stephen Harper doled it out back in 2005. One wishes he’d heed his own advice today.
Do the right thing and what the majority of Canadians want, Mr. Harper. Split C-38 up. This is Our Budget — not yours.
